About Lambda Theta Alpha

"Lambda Theta Alpha is a way of life."
-Founding Mother, Dr. Thomasa Gonzalez

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated is the FIRST and LARGEST Latin Sorority in the nation established in 1975 at Kean College (now University) in Union, NJ. Our 17 Founding Mothers came together to form a sisterhood based on UNITY, LOVE, AND RESPECT that would serve as a support system for ladies at Kean University. In an era full of machismo and racism, there was a need for the empowerment of Latina woman, and many minority women at that.

The Alpha Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated was born, and 47 years later, has grown to have over 180 undergraduate and alumnae chapters that are still going strong. With chapters from coast to coast, in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Michigan, and Puerto Rico, as well as graduate chapters in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Texas.
The purpose of Lambda Theta Alpha shall be to provide a sisterhood based on Unity, Love and Respect. To develop strong leaders who will then provide and practice political, social and cultural activities. To promote Latino unity through charitable and educational programs. To maintain a high standard of learning and serve as a voice for all Latino students.
Lambda Theta Alpha is not only the FIRST LATIN SORORITY in the nation, but is the LARGEST. Incorporated in 1979 as an Academic Sorority, LAMBDA THETA ALPHA strives for the education and success of our sisters. In addition our dedication to uplifting and serving the campus and community at large, LAMBDA THETA ALPHA prides itself in being LATIN BY TRADITION, NOT BY DEFINITION. We are a non-exclusive organization that welcomes ladies of all races, color, creed and religion. It's not about being Latin, it's about being a LADY.
Our Founding Mothers

Our 17 revolutionary Founding Mothers came together and stayed together by choice in an effort to establish a support system and at the same time create the first Latin Sorority in the nation. The Founding Mothers are more than historical icons to the sisterhood, they are distinguished professionals within their fields and they continue to contribute to their respective communities on social, political, and educational levels.
